Week 3 Story: The War for Earth, A Halo Story

The Prophets Truth, Regret, and Mercy were shown by the forerunners a planet of blue and green that held many secrets for the great journey. The great journey as told by the prophets is to activate halo rings, in order to release the divine winds and elevate those worthy to godhood. The prophets whisked away their covenant armies to Earth, seeking to capture the untold secrets that lie untouched below the surface. The covenant army reached earth and began decimating the inhabitants while excavating large areas searching for the untold secret. The secret came to be known as a forerunner portal instillation that would take the covenant to a ring world. Along the death and destruction, the covenant activated the portal and went through it.

A new breed of soldier was born during this time, and the best among them was called Master Chief. Earth swore to use this new soldier to exact revenge upon the covenant and their leaders. The UNSC Fleet command followed the covenant to this ring world, and many battles took place over nine years. During this time supplies dwindled and the UNSC fleet was forced to pillage nearby covenant worlds. The battles were easily won, and much spoils were gathered onto the ships. Military leadership gathered the army to tell them they would have to go without pay despite their many victories. This angered the soldiers, among them Master Chief who swore he would not fight another under this leadership. Johnny "Arrow to the Knee" Phillips, Master Chiefs most trusted friend, consoled him and asked to wear his armor in the next battle to take the ring world. Chief agreed, despite knowing it was against regulation and that Johnny wasn't trained to use it.

The battle for the ringworld lasted days and there were heavy losses on both sides. The sea of soldiers on both sides parted ways so that Johnny, disguised as master chief, and an Elite named Shani The Reclaimer, poster boy for the prophets war campaign, could fight. The fight was epic, blood splattered on the floor with every blow. Shani pulled out a bow and arrow, unusual for his kind that commonly relied on energy rifles, and shot Johnny in the knee. Johnny cried out "oh fated by my name, I have died by an arrow to the knee", and dropped dead from a non-fatal wound. Shani, quickly looted the armor and retreated as the armies clashed again. Master Chief heard the news and came to the edge of the battle to make his presence known, and covenant forces retreated three times allowing them to retrieve the body of Johnny. Disappointed that his actions caused the death of his friend, Master Chief vowed to exact revenge on Shani. He meet Shani outside the walls of a great forerunner structure, with the prophets looking down upon them. As they did battle, Shani threw his bow at Master Chief but it glanced off his skin that was smothered in baby oil. Master Chief returned the favor and threw his gun at Shani, striking him in the neck crushing his windpipe. While gasping for air, Shani with his last breath asked Chief to not desecrate his body. Chief laughing said no, immediately thinking of the best way to desecrate his body. Chief tied the body of Shani to a banshee and did loop de loops for all to see. The prophets wept at this display. The prophet of Truth sought to recover the body of Shani, so he took the key to the halo rings and made towards the camp of Master Chief. Chief agreed to the ransom of Shani along with a nine days truce so that each side could bury their dead.

This Story is based on the retelling of Homer's Iliad retold by A. J. Church. The universe the story takes place in is the halo universe instead of the ancient Greek time period. The prophets took something from earth, provoking the whole conflict. Master Chief and Johnny replace Achilles and Patroclus, and the rest of the storyline follows the same events.

  1. Hi DKNK,

I enjoyed reading the retelling of Homer's Iliad in the halo universe. I also caught that reference of Skyrim in your story, which I find funny. I also liked that your story mostly sticks to the original plot of Homer's Iliad.

I wonder why the army would have to fight without pay? Don't they have enough resources to go around for compensating the soldiers? I was thinking that maybe you can elaborate on the reason why.

I have dove into the halo universe before and I understood that it is very complex and hard to condense into roughly a page long story. In a perspective of a reader who is unfamiliar with the halo universe, I was thinking if you elaborate more on who the forerunners are and the ring world. I think that would clear up some confusion on world building. Some added dialogues would add some emotions to the story or maybe if that's not your style, you can also use more descriptive action writings as well. Overall, I like your story and I can't wait to see what you could come up with in the future.

  2. Hey DKNK,
First of all, I love that you switched from the Greek universe to the Halo universe. Such a creative idea and I was hooked from the first sentence talking about the prophets. Halo games are a part of my childhood, and still today, and I have many strong memories in these games. Also, I like how you added some funny unique moments throughout like the army not getting paid so Master Chief gives his armor to Jonny "Arrow to the Knee" Phillips.

I wonder why it was so easy for the Covenant to just have their way with earth. Were earth's armies that much weaker compared to the Covenant? How did the UNSC start winning? A full scale war couldn't have been won just because of Master Chief could it? I do not fully understand the war, but that may be from my fandom of Halo not mixing well with my lack of expertise of the Iliad.

For those who are not aware with the Halo universe, what if you expand on the type of soldier Master Chief is, and briefly talk about the spartan program? Or, just talk about spartans in general. This could potentially be a comparison to highly trained Greek soldiers or heroes from the Greeks perhaps. I think this would give more context to Master Chief and the type of soldier he really is. Overall, I am a big fan of this story because of the mixing of Halo and Greek stories. I also really like how you added some comedic flares throughout the story to make it unique and funny.
