Reading Notes: American Indian Fairy Tales Part A

There was an old Indian named Iagoo, he was wiser and had experienced more than any other person. He was very popular with the children, making them seashell necklaces or bows. But his stories were the reason the children adorned him so much. He tells them a story about the wind, and tells them that it cant hurt them.

In the past very few people roamed the earth, they fished for food. The best fish were in the cold north, guarded by the north wind. his icy breath was only stopped by the south wind, for if not the whole world would be snow and ice. The north and south winds continually fought for dominance. They left one person behind that thought they could brave the cold and continue to fish when the north wind took over.

The left behind man began to prepare for winter, he gathered wood and survival supplies. He fished through holes in the ice, eventually heading home with a large load. The north wind was angered by this, so he sought out to destroy this two legged trespasser. He called upon a fierce snow storm and broke into the mans house. But the mans fire made north wind start to thaw out. North wind and the man went outside and wrestled in the snow. The man defeated north wind and he retreated farther north.

North Wind is personified in Indian Folklore as an old man
